St Paul's, like all Episcopal Churches, follows the liturgy provided in the Book of Common Prayer (BCP) The full title is "The Book of Common Prayer and Administration of the Sacraments and other Rites and Ceremonies of the Church."

The BCP includes the common liturgies for all the various rites and practices of the church, including the Morning and Evening Offices, the Eucharist, Ministration to the Sick, Reconciliation of a Penitent, and many others.

The Book of Common Prayer (BCP) Background:

The Book of Common Prayer has been the foundational prayer book of the Church of England since 1549. Revised several times, it offers current liturgies for today's churches. It was one of the instruments of the English Reformation, and was also adapted and revised for use in other churches that are part of the Worldwide Anglican Communion. The first English BCP replaced the various Latin rites that had been used in different parts of England with a single compact volume in English. The 1549 version was drastically revised in 1552 and more subtly changed in 1559 and 1662.

The 1559 English prayer book came to the colonies with early settlers in 1607. At the time of the Revolutionary War the English 1662 prayer book was used by Anglican churches of the Church of England in many countries. In 1789, after the Revolutionary War, when the Episcopal Church separated itself from the Church of England, the prayerbook was revised. The first bishops of the Episcopal church in the United States brought the Scottish influence to the American Prayerbook. The Scottish prayerbook had evolved from the English prayerbook between 1559 and the early 1700s. Bishop Samuel Seabury of Connecticut who was consecrated in Aberdeen in 1784, brought the Scottish influence back with him. The first edition of the Episcopal BCP was published in 1790 and was clearly drawn from the 1662 English book and the 1764 Scottish Liturgy.

The preface to the 1789 Book of Common Prayer says, "this Church is far from intending to depart from the Church of England in any essential point of doctrine, discipline, or worship...further than local circumstances require." Although there were some differences, the US prayerbook of 1789 was modelled after the the English Prayer Book.

Further revisions occurred in 1892 and 1928, in which minor changes were made.
With each edition the wording was revised to reflect the current language of the people.

In 1979, a more substantial revision was made which incorporated additional
prayers, changed the format of the the Prayerbook and offered two rites for
the most common services,

St Paul's uses the more contemporaty Rite II versions in public worship.
